Does Your Insurance Cover Acupuncture in California? Here's How to Find Out.
If you’ve been curious about acupuncture but assumed it would be an out-of-pocket expense, you might be in for a pleasant surprise.
In California, a growing number of insurance plans cover acupuncture as part of their standard benefits. At HABA Acupuncture in San Rafael, we help patients understand their coverage every day — so they can focus on care, not confusing insurance paperwork.
Whether you are seeking support for pain, headaches, stress, chronic tension, or overall wellness, checking your benefits may help make treatment more accessible than you expected.
The Short Answer
Cigna members are in-network. Aetna, Anthem, United Healthcare, Healthnet, and Blue Shield patients may be able to use out-of-network benefits.
HABA Acupuncture is in-network with Cigna HMO and Cigna PPO plans. If you carry Cigna, your visits with Dr. Mara are covered at the highest benefit level, which may mean a lower out-of-pocket cost for you.
Many Cigna patients pay only a small copay, and some may pay very little or nothing once their deductible has been met.
For patients with Aetna, United Healthcare, Anthem, Healthnet, or Blue Shield, Dr. Mara is an out-of-network provider. That does not always mean your visits are not covered. Many out-of-network plans still contribute meaningfully to acupuncture care once deductible requirements are met.
The best part is that HABA’s billing team submits claims to your carrier on your behalf, so you do not have to file paperwork yourself.
What Conditions Are Typically Covered?
Most insurance plans that cover acupuncture do so for medically necessary conditions. Coverage varies by plan, but commonly covered conditions include:
Chronic lower back pain
Neck pain and headaches
Osteoarthritis of the knee
Joint pain and musculoskeletal conditions
Nausea related to chemotherapy
Fibromyalgia
Chronic pain conditions
Coverage for stress, anxiety, insomnia, women’s health, fertility support, and digestive concerns can vary by plan. However, these areas are always worth asking about, because many plans have expanded acupuncture coverage in recent years.
How to Check Your Benefits in 5 Minutes
Checking your acupuncture benefits does not have to be complicated. Here is the simplest way to get clarity:
Click “Verify My Insurance” on the HABA website and fill out the short form with your insurance details.
Call your insurance company and ask:
“Does my plan cover acupuncture?”
“Is HABA Acupuncture or Dr. Mara Canizzaro in-network?”Ask about your deductible, which is the amount you may need to pay before insurance starts covering care.
Ask about your copay or coinsurance per visit.
Ask whether there is a yearly limit on the number of acupuncture visits covered by your plan.
If you are unsure about any of this, call HABA at (415) 326-3380. We help patients verify their benefits regularly and are happy to guide you through the process.
A Word from Dr. Mara
“I got into this medicine because I believe everyone deserves access to deep, effective healing. Insurance coverage is one way that barrier lowers — and I want every patient who walks through our door to know we will help them make the most of whatever coverage they have.
